House of Family - Together Under One Roof: Under the patronage of the Liechtenstein Red Cross, a central meeting place for generations has been established in the center of Schaan with the House of Families.

14 organizations that address the various concerns of pregnant women, parents, and children found their new home there on December 1, 2023. These include the Parent Child Forum, the Family Center müze, the Mothers’ and Fathers’ Counseling, a baby therapy, and many more.

Family Support

Family support means that families are supported financially, among other things.

For example, there is money when a baby is born. This is called a birth allowance.

In addition, families receive child benefits every month.

There is also support for people with disabilities or for elderly individuals.

The specialist office schwanger.li offers counseling for pregnant women in Liechtenstein. A team of experienced counselors provides information, advice, and support for pregnant women, men, and couples. They conduct counseling sessions for questions, concerns, or problems related to pregnancy and childbirth. The service is free and can be anonymous upon request.

Parental Leave / Sick Pay during Maternity / Maternity Allowance

Maternity Protection

Mothers need to be protected after childbirth.

During this time, they do not work. This is called maternity protection. The maternity protection lasts a total of

20 weeks. If a mother worked before giving birth, she is entitled to daily allowances.

During this time, she receives 80% of her salary.

Parental Leave

Parental leave is entitled to both parents if they have been continuously employed by an employer for at least six months. Each parent is entitled to four months of parental leave, two of which are paid and two are unpaid.

In January 2026, paid paternity leave was introduced. Paternity leave consists of two consecutive weeks. It must be taken within eight months after the birth.

Maternity Allowance

There are mothers who do not have the right to receive daily allowances. They can apply for a one-time maternity allowance. They will receive this maternity allowance if the legal requirements are met. Here you will find more information:

Parental Allowance / Family Allowance

When a family has a child, they need more money. This is provided by the Family Equalization Fund (FAK). For example, a family receives child benefits every month or when a child is born, they receive a one-time birth allowance. There are also parents who live alone with their children; they receive a single-parent allowance. For parents who do not work in Liechtenstein and live abroad (cross-border commuters), there is a differential compensation. Extracurricular Child Care / Kindergarten

Working parents can use extracurricular child care services. There, trained individuals take care of the children. For example, in a daycare center. The children can then play with other children and spend the day there.

Registration for Child Care

If you want to have your child cared for externally, you must register your child on the parent portal (website).

Funding of Child Care

Some parents cannot afford external child care. For this, one can apply for financial support at the Office for Social Services (ASD). This is tiered according to income. More information can be found here:

Help, Support and Protection for Children and Youth

At the Office for Social Services (ASD), there is a Child and Youth Service with two specialist areas. The Child and Youth Welfare sector and the Promotion, Protection, and Addiction sector. The following is done there:

  • Child and Youth Welfare:

    Here, families are supported. It is ensured that a family can meet the needs of children and youth. If the protection or well-being of children or youth is at risk, child and youth welfare intervenes.

  • Child and Youth Promotion promotes extracurricular child and youth work. For example, through professional support and counseling of individuals and organizations. It also provides financial support.

  • Child and Youth Protection creates conditions that protect children and youth from dangers. Parents and teachers receive support in dealing with these dangers.

Separation / Divorce

A separation or divorce is a difficult life stage. In both cases, it requires a lot of strength. The consequences can be far-reaching, especially when there are children involved.

    Financial Support

    Financial support or supplementary benefits are received when a person does not have an adequate minimum income. The minimum income determines how much money a person needs at least for living, for food, clothing, and housing.

    Counseling and Help

    Mothers' and Fathers' Counseling by the Liechtenstein Red Cross

    Parents and caregivers of young children (up to five years) receive professional advice over the phone, during home visits, and in conversation. The counseling is voluntary, free of charge, and confidential. It covers topics like breastfeeding, nutrition, care, development, education, and the role of parents. Some important information (breastfeeding, nutrition, illnesses) is also available in other languages.

    Pro Juventute - Mothers and Fathers Counseling

    Another service is the Mothers' and Fathers' Counseling by Pro Juventute.

    You can call there or use the chat function to ask questions about everyday life with babies or young children. The counseling covers topics such as breastfeeding, nutrition, care, development, education, and parenting. On the website, you will find articles, some of which are written in easy language.

    Network Family

    Stressed parents find support, counseling, and companionship here.

    The service is aimed at parents with children aged 0–5 years who are in stressful situations. For example, newly arrived parents with few contacts or language barriers.

    Parent Child Forum

    The Parent Child Forum helps with various

    questions and offers counseling. For example, regarding child care or educational matters. But also when there are problems in the family. The service is voluntary and available to all residents in Liechtenstein. The Parent Child Forum organizes courses and events on family and educational topics.

    For non-German-speaking parents, there are discussion rounds in their native language, the so-called “Femmestische”. There, various topics such as health and education are discussed.

    Children and Youth Service

    At the Office for Social Services (ASD), there is a department for children and youth: the Children and Youth Service. There, families with children and adolescents are supported, for example, when they are in crisis or difficult life situations.

    School Social Work

    School social work is a free and low-threshold service provided by the Liechtenstein Education Office for public schools.

    It accompanies children and adolescents in the process of growing up, supports them in coping with life, and promotes their skills for solving personal and social problems. Teachers and parents are strengthened in their educational tasks, and the school is supported in social-pedagogical matters.

    Some children have problems in school, for example, with learning or behavioral issues. The School Psychological Service helps. It supports students, parents, and teachers. Detailed information can be found here:

    Housing Contributions

    Families and single parents with dependent children are entitled to housing contributions. The families must live in rented accommodation and have resided in Liechtenstein for at least one year. Application forms are available at the Office for Social Services as well as all municipal administrations.
